Susan Olson started her Mandarin-learning adventure in 1988, when she went on a study abroad program to Nanjing University in Mainland China. After returning, she finished her B.A. and teaching certification in Spanish, then lived in Taiwan for a year and a half. Upon her return to the U.S., she completed an M.A. in Chinese Language Acquisition and completed her TESL certification at Brigham Young University and began teaching Mandarin there. In 1995 she moved to the Bay Area, added Mandarin to her teacher credential, and started the Mandarin program at Piedmont High and Middle Schools. She has also taught Spanish at Piedmont Middle School and Piedmont Language School, as well as ESL at Berkeley. In her spare time she hangs out at home with her four children!

Ms. Yu joined PUSD faculty in 2003 and teaches all levels of Mandarin, from beginning to Honors courses. She graduated from Harbin Teachers' University in Northeastern China, and taught high school for 11 years before coming to the United States. Ms. Yu attended San Francisco State University and received her Single Subject Credential in Chinese as well as an M.A. degree in Secondary Education. Over the past two summers she attended intensive teachers' workshops at both Ohio State University, and China Eastern Teacher's University in Shanghai. Ms. Yu resides in the East Bay with her husband and two children.

Ma-Chen Tu--Piedmont Middle School


Ma-Chen Tu is the most recent member of the Piedmont High School/Middle School staff. She was hired after showing exemplary skills as a student teacher at Piedmont High School. Ms. Tu's teaching experience ranges from being a teacher's assistant in a middle school's Special Education program, to teaching Mandarin at two high schools, as well as two weekend Chinese schools. She graduated from Tunghai University of Taiwan in 1982 and received her Single Subject Teaching Credential in Chinese from the California State University, East Bay. Ms. Tu currently lives in the Bay Area with her husband and two children.
